Saturday July 5th - Isle de la Madeleine

Low clouds, a bit of fog today, but it didn't rain! We had to tender into shore this morning for our excursion. (Getting on and off the bobbing tender is a trick!)

We boarded a school bus and after a brief stop for a walk along the shore and wild roses, we visited a beer brewery called A L de Abri La Tempete (?). The manager gave us a great talk about brewing beer on the island and offered two tastings - very good!

Our drive was limited to the main island of Ile du Cap Aux Mueles. Ferry service is available from PEI . The 12 island group is actually part of Quebec Province; located in the Gulf of St Lawrence.

Our next stop was to the Phare du Borgot lighthouse overlooking some spectacular red cliffs. Interestingly, this non-working light is actually a replica made out of fiberglass.

Continuing on we stopped to visit the Eglise Saint-Pierre de le Verniere church. Interesting story - in 1872 a shipload of lumber had wrecked off shore. Recovery was not successful. the following year a storm washed it all on shore. Must have been a sign so they built a church! Actually it took three attempts to build it strong enough to withstand storm. But here is 150 years later!

Returning back to the town, it was lunchtime. Unlike other ports we had visited, we found the lack of eateries quite distressing. We walked up the main St and finally found a nice bakery called Madelon which gave us a nice grilled sandwich (right across the street from a Tim Hortons, which would have been our fall back). Walked back to the dock along a paved path along the bluff. Lots of wildflowers.

So, this little town doesn't have much to offer but we had a nice day nonetheless. Tender back to the ship and home by 3:00.

No I didn't
