Awoke to heavy rain but it cleared right up and turned into a nice, warm day! Our excursion isn't until 3:00 this afternoon so we enjoyed the morning walking around this very charming town! As usual, lots of tourist shopping at the cruise terminal. Our first stop was to visit the spectacular St. Dunstan's Basilica. Then walk down Queen Street with a stop for ice cream at a Cow's Ice Cream Shop. Lot of stores, eateries, pubs all around. Obviously this place relies on tourism!
Returning to the cruise port we had an excellent lunch at the Lobster on the Wharf - locally sourced Blue Mussels, Strawberry Salad and a bowl of Lobster Bisque!
Our afternoon excursion was a bus trip across the 10 mile Confederation Bridge to New Brunswick and the Jourimain Nature Center on the other side. The history of the bridge is an important part of the history of the island. Prior to its completion in the late 90's, ferry was the only way across. It has dramatically changed the economy of the island. It was a promise from the other provinces, who were joining together to form Canada in the 1860s, that the island would get a bridge if it agreed to join the Confederation. It only took 120 years for that promise to be realized!
Late dinner tonight with the Nappi's, then a so-so comedian in the main theater. Tomorrow we go to Isles de la Madeleine.
