It's always interesting to see a ship arrive in port, with fancy maneuvers to hit the pier just right. We arrived in Halifax around 8:00am; our docking is right "downtown". We would be joined later by Norwegian Star.
Weather today is cloudy and 60's, no wind. Perfect for our excursion.
We boarded a two story bus ( we were upstairs via narrow staircase), drove around the city for a bit, then out to the famous Peggy's Cove and its lighthouse. The granite rock formation is incredible! Great for "scrambling". The lighthouse is very picturesque. Lots of people! I would have liked more time to spend there; we only had one hour. And, the sea was usually calm, so no crashing waves (darn). The little fishing village of Peggy's Cove is beautiful.
Our guide on the bus was excellent (they usually are). She told the story, that we'd heard before, of the great munitions explosion of 1917 in the Halifax Harbor that killed more than 2000 people. (Google it).
On our way back into town we stopped at Fairview Lawn Cemetery where more than 100 Titanic victims were buried together. That ship hit an iceberg in 1912, not far from here. There were 2200 on board; only 700 survivors were rescued.
Another famous story here, although more recent, was 9/11. Like in Gander, Newfoundland, thousands of people were stuck in the airport; 40 airplanes and 7,000 people. The locals rose to the occasion and housed and supported the "refugees" who were here for a few days.
The ship is not leaving Halifax until 10:30 tonight. I assume its because its only 1.5 days to Boston. That gave us lots of time after our excursion to explore. Right from our berth, there is a great boardwalk that runs about 1.5 miles along the waterfront. Lots of interesting restaurants.
We met up with Nappis about 5:30 for cocktails then walked just across the street to a funny little Italian pizza place called Tomavinos. Very good pizza with Greek salad.
Back to our room by 8:00. We're done for the day! Tomorrow is Sea Day as we continue on to Boston.
